Dear Prudence, won't you come out to play?

Rikka had made a quick run back to the city to search for the last twofew items she needed to be able to start tie dying things: gloves, a fork, some garbage bags, and a couple small plastic tubs. Thankfully the items hadn’t been hard to find at all and she had made it back to Inferni with plenty of daylight left. It had been a long time since she had tried her hand at this and usually she had done it with other members of the commune who were much more experienced and skilled at this sort of thing than she was. Still, even if they didn’t turn out too well it would be a fun way to pass the time.

Once she got back to her cave she started to get everything ready. She filled the tubs up part way with water from a nearby pond. In one bucket she set the two shirts that she had picked up in them to soak, and the other she used to pour water into the different bottles of dye. She shook up the dye and then cut small pieces of twine that would be needed to tie the shirts. Next she laid out the garbage back near the entrance of her cave and set everything up. Rikka took one of the shirts out of the tub and wrung it out, ready to get started on her little project.

The sun was out today and it lifted Vieira's spirits a little. Her days went on the same often times and there was always a constant rain, snow, or overcast, and the snow as a nice change of pace. She had permission to leave the cave for a little while and she decided to head toward the center of the caves in hopes the fire was up for the group. Unfortunately, no one had lit it that day when she approached and she stared at the burnt logs lightly dusted with fire. Her head turned to look in the direction of her cave, almost decided to ask Kaena to help but she decided against it. She was out here to get out of the woman's hair, not further mess around when the woman wanted to be alone.

Vieira took a long breath and managed to catch a fresh scent of Rikka in addition to something that was odd. Her head turned to see the young woman hanging around the entrance of her den with items she could not decipher of their purpose from her position. Her hands lingered at the sides of her hips as she moved around the pit, approaching the cave quietly and looking at what she was doing. Her eyes settled on the woman's hands, watching her actions, before calling out to her. "Miss Rikka," she greeted politely and lingered a few yards away in case the other did not want to be bothered. Rikka had reacted differently than the woman had seen before and did not want to upset her if she could help it.

The slave thought the girl was nice, at least, and wanted a bit more of her company. The way Rikka treated her the first time felt odd but it was comforting, as if Vieira was more than just a slave. Deep down, the woman knew she would be nothing more and it would not change; she was unfortunately so dependent on her owner at the time.

With the shirt wrung out she laid it out over the garbage bag and smoothed out the wet fabric. She didn't really wear clothes, but maybe it'd be nice to wear at night or if she didn't end up wanting it she could give it to someone else. Most in Inferni probably wouldn't want anything to do with a bright, multi colored shirt but she was certain she could find someone who would want it. Perhaps Anselm's lady friend would like it, or she could track down Mati and give it to her. The wolf would enjoy it, she was certain of that, what she wasn't certain of though was if the earthen hued female would want to see her again. Things had been going great and then she had just kind of freaked out a little and taken off. Rikka wasn't sure what had happened, but she hoped that the friendship could be salvaged for she had really enjoyed the other's company. They seemed like kindred spirits.

The hybrid had become so consumed by her project that she had not scented Vieira nor heard her cautiously moving closer to her den. When she heard her name her head popped up and a large smile blossomed on her face, tail wagging softly behind her. Rikka had felt bad for making the other girl uncomfortable the first time they had met and hadn't wanted to impose herself in case Vieira would prefer to stay away from her. Seeing her now made her happy. "Hello Vieira! You can come over if you want." Maybe tie dying was something that the more slender coy could enjoy with her. It was a task, and perhaps that would put her at ease. Though of course her participation would be voluntarily only, she would never order her to do anything. She may not be able to change Vieira's situation but she at least was going to treat her like she deserved.

Vieira watched Rikka as she splayed out the t-shirt on the cave floor, covered by a plastic bag. Her golden eyes narrowed at the act and she jerked when finally responded to. She turned toward the figure of the woman and took a step forward but did not make it to the cave. She wanted to make sure it was all right but the smile radiating from the woman was enough to let her advance. Her hands dangled at her side for a long moment before settling on the small of her back, her fingers grasping her arms carefully and advanced into the den to spend time with the woman.

The woman remembered Kaena being upset Vieira had said something to Rikka, that she belonged to the woman, and the slave gathered on that Rikka had said something to her mother despite her objections. Vieira could not hold a grudge, however, because it was not her place. She could not hold things against anyone and as she lingered in the doorway, watching, she wondered what the other was really like. She wanted to ask but she did not and instead observed the work of the other and remained quite. She was simply the audience in the cave.

Rikka watched encouragingly as Vieira slowly approached, seemingly wondering if it were a good idea or not. A stab of worry struck the woman's heart, but she did her best to not let it show on her face. She really didn't know what the coyote thought of her and if there had been any repercussions for the conversation that she had had with Kaena. There didn't appear to be anything wrong with Vieira, but she knew that didn't necessarily mean that she had not faced some sort of retribution. If Rikka were to ever find out that the other had faced punishment for what she had said she would have more words for her mother. She wouldn't stand for Vieira to get punished for anything Rikka said or did.

The smaller canine remained standing and observing and didn't seem particularly interested in what was happening despite watching the actions closely. "You can sit, you don't have to stand. Though you can do whatever is comfortable." If Vieira was more comfortable standing then that was fine. "I'm doing a bit of tie dying. You can either watch or do some too, I have another shirt." It didn't occur to her that the other might not have a clue what tie dying was. If asked though she would be more than happy to explain the process and then the outcome.

Rikka spoke to her and Vieira smiled only slightly. It was not that she did not have interest in what she was doing but the fact she was clueless. Her eyes narrowed slightly at each item on the cave floor and then lifted her ears. Her knees jerked as if to sit but it was then turned and the option was on her. Vieira should have known better that the female would not give her an order. She remained still, though, and let her hands fall back to her side. Her nails lightly tapped her thighs in thought, remaining quiet while the other spoke and explained her actions.

She let her jaws hang ajar to ask about tie dying but it took a moment to say much of anything. It was foreign to her and it was a surprise she knew what a shirt was. Clothes were not common where she was from and it did not seem to be something here. "Wh-what is it?" she asked, staring at the bucket of color as if it would explain. Trying to piece it together did not help all that much and she just settled where she was standing. Vieira would help if Rikka wanted her to but otherwise, she was not entirely sure what all this was in front of her.

It seemed she would sit, but then when Rikka wanted her to chose between the two options Vieira halted and did not seem to know what to do. Her ears flicked back in disappointment for a moment. She was torn between wanting to give the other options and telling her what to do just because it seemed to be what Vieira was more comfortable with. "Would it...make you more comfortable if I...asked you what to do?" She refused to use the term "tell" or "order", but maybe this could be a half way point for the two females who came from such different places and backgrounds.

The coy girl seemed quite confused and she supposed it wasn't much of a surprise. She doubted there was much tie dying around where they kept slaves as a normal thing. "Well, you take a plain shirt, like this, and then you twist it around and tie it and then apply some dye. It makes the shirt really colorful and pretty. It's nothing that needs to be done, it's just for fun." It was much easier to show than to tell about the process and it would undoubtedly make much more sense when Vieira saw how it was done. "I can show you and then you can make one if you'd like. Or I could give you the one I make. You could wear it this winter to keep you warmer." Vieira's pelt was even thinner than her own and she must get cold up here in Nova Scotia.

Vieira suddenly felt awkward that she troubled Rikka and her ears twitched upon her head. Part of her wished she would have gone to a different part of the pack but it was too late now. She made the woman uncomfortable and her eyes moved to the cave floor for a moment and tried to figure out what to do. She did not want others to feel weird about her but she could not change. Even if set free, Vieira would be no different. The woman would simply find someone else, as she had to do when Sivaro died. Perhaps the choice of Eris might not have been the best she could have gotten but it led her here. Her physical pain was few and far between whereas in Eterne it was on a daily basis from whoever had control of her that day.

"It is okay," she finally responded, indirectly meaning she did not want Rikka to feel uncomfortable. It did not matter, to her, if Vieira was uncomfortable. It did not matter what she felt as long as the other was okay. Vieira was a slave, less than coyote, and could do nothing to change it in her mind.

When Rikka explained, Vieira listened with ears cupped forward. She even leaned slightly to look between the shirt and dye. "Dye?" she questioned. It was a colorful liquid but nothing she heard before. Vieira looked to the set up the woman had and tried to piece together each step while she explained in detail. She made no inclination she wanted to help or do one for herself. There was no spark inside her. Instead, she just asked questions in case Rikka wanted her to make one for herself or for anyone else. However, the last statement but a bit of a smile on her face. Something was being made for her (or the option of, rather) and her tail twitched. "That is nice of you," she added and made sure to steer clear of indicating she might want something, knowing how to get around such things when she had such demanding masters in her past.

She hadn't meant to make Vieira more uncomfortable by the fact that she herself felt uncomfortable. Rikka just wanted to help find a way for them to connect on a ground where they could both feel more in their element instead of out of it. She wanted the slave girl to see her as someone she could trust and that would treat her nicely. She wanted to be her friend, but so far she was not having all that much luck in that venture. Hopefully if she kept trying without pushing things would start to fall into place and they would both get used to one another. The woman heaved a small sigh, though it was only directed at the difficult situation, not at Vieira herself. "I'm just trying to find a way where we'll both be more comfortable. I know this is a bit odd for both of us." The fact that dealing with her was difficult for the other coyote was not lost on her.

The fact that Vieira was leaning in seemed like a good sign to her. "Yeah dye, it's this stuff that changes the color of fabric. It can even change fur color if you have the right kind." The commune had been far from civilized, but dyes and paints and shirts had been commonplace. She hadn't been sure if she would be able to find any dye here, but Halifax had turned out to be an inevitable jackpot. Rikka's smile grew as Vieira's did. Vieira probably didn't often get gifts and so now the golden woman was set on making something from her. "It's no problem! Here, sit down and you can watch me do it." Her words weren't an order, she would say something like that to anyone, and so she didn't feel wrong in saying it to Vieira. It would be nice for the other to just sit and watch instead of having to do something herself.

It would be a never ending battle between the two to try and find a comfort zone. Vieira had come to terms that Rikka would not understand her lifestyle, regardless of Vieira's willingness. Her mentality was not strong enough to handle much more than a slavery lifestyle and had long sense come to understand it would not change. Rikka tried, though, to make it easier for the both of them and Vieira had to bend herself in order to comply. She only nodded a response but offered nothing else. She lingered in the awkward conversation for a bit longer and tried to focus, instead, on the task at hand: tie-dying.

When explained, she thought it sounded like tattoos she had seen before. Or tribal marks she had seen on her way up to Inferni from Eterne. Her eyes narrowed slightly and subtly looked over Rikka to see if she had anything but found nothing she could spot. She hummed silently to herself and glanced toward her hands when she had no more questions to figure out what the other was actually doing. She did not need any more questions, though, because Rikka offered to make the shirt for her, indirectly ordering her to sit, and Vieira started to lower herself to the ground. She made herself comfortable on the cave floor, crossing her legs obediently into an Indian fashion, and gently laid her palms face down on her knees.

The woman's golden eyes then turned and watched Rikka's movements as she prepared to make her first t-shirt for the slave. She thought of the gift Snake had gotten her, the legos, and how they were currently in a building-like form. Vieira had not had much time to mess with them lately, cleaning or being sent away from the cave to give her master some time, but she had found she hit a brick wall with them. She no longer knew what to do with the items and they sat, collecting dust, inside her room.

Communicating with Vieira was one of the most trying times Rikka had had communicating with anyone. Oftentimes she had an easier time talking to people who she was completely at odds with because at least then she knew where they both stood. With the slender coyote though things were much more hazy and difficult. It was impossible for her to believe that the other was less than a being and so she refused to treat her any differently than she would anyone else. However it was hard then for Vieira to react to the way that Rikka was treating her. It might be a never ending viscous cycle, but she could only change herself so much. She would never be the type to try and order the other female around and tell her what to do. She wanted a more equal relationship even though she knew that things would never truly be equal in the other's mind.

Still, for the time being she would not wrack her brain over this never ending problem. Right now she would just concentrate on making a pretty and colorful shirt for Vieira. Maybe after she watched her make one she would want to make one herself. Either way though, the de le Poer woman was happy to have someone to give the shirt to once it was all dyed, dried, and finished. Once Vieira settled herself Rikka reached over to grab the fork and also the twine and brought it in front of her. Placing the prongs of the fork in the middle of the shirt she began to twirl as if she were gathering spaghetti until the fabric was all clumped up in a spiral. Then she removed the fork and grabbed the twine, tying the shirt once lengthwise and once widthwise. "You twirl it and tie it like this because if we just added the dye it would all turn out one color and that isn't very exciting. This way we can use different colors and there'll be a pretty design."

From there she grabbed the bottles of red, yellow, and blue dye and put on the gloves that would protect her fur from the dye. "Now we add the dye to each little section." With care she added the blue to one section, the red to the next, yellow to the next, and finally combined the yellow and blue in the last to create green. "Then we flip it and do the same thing to the other side." Rikka proceeded to repeat what she had done before to the undyed side of the t-shirt. Once it was all finished she looked down at it satisfied. "And that's it! Now I just have to wrap it up in one of the other bags and set it in the back of my cave to sit for a few hours. After that I'll rinse it and it'll be ready for you to wear!" She looked up to Vieira then, hoping to see that she was pleased or excited or at least some sort of positive emotion.

Vieira watched Rikka work and did her best to listen as closely as she could. She wanted to learn how to do such a thing in case the woman wanted to make one for herself lately and she had to be prepared. She had to take in all the information once and do her best not to ask questions. The less she asked, or talked, the better. It had always been that way and one of the reasons she rarely, if ever, started or added conversation. She was started to catch on that Kaena might want a little more from her but it was difficult to come up with things. No one spoke to her much back in Eterne except to order her around. Life in Inferni challenged her everyday when others spoke to her; Rikka, Anselm, Gabriel. Even Kaena on a daily basis. The coyote she felt comfortable around was Snake who seemed to lack emotion and sympathy for her lifestyle. It made things easier if others accepted it and did little to provoke a life she had gone without.

When Rikka finished in a sort of ta-da fashion, Vieira looked over the wet bundled up shirt that was now an array of colors. It was still over her head but she made no comment and for a moment she stayed quiet to try and find the words for such a thing. Vieira did not think she wanted to try, things such as these did not attract her attention. Not much did and it was not a surprise if she showed disinterest. It was always about the other person and Vieira had spent a life of devotion to the other. Her legs adjusted and she closed her hands together as she put on a smile. "It is nice," she commented and nodded her head to confirm she meant it. Vieira was curious to know what it looked like when it was finished but she recalled Rikka saying it had to sit out.

Rikka hadn't paid much attention to Vieira while she was busy working on the shirt. It wasn't because she was trying to ignore her, but simply she had been focused on the task at hand and considering it had been a long time since she had tie dyed anything she didn't want to mess up. That had been part of the reason she had spoke the instructions and steps out loud, it had been almost as much for her benefit as for the other's. Honestly she was surprised that she hadn't forgotten anything or had to pause and dig deep to remember what she was supposed to do next. While she had dyed a fair amount of times she had always had someone right next to her who would bail her out if she got lost. Knowing that she was capable of doing it on her own was a good feeling, like she still was carrying little pieces of the commune with her. Now, whether or not the shirt would turn out okay was yet to be seen, but she had good hopes for it.

After Vieira responded her golden eyes returned to the damp, lumpy bundle of fabric and dye, a soft laugh coming from her throat. "I know it doesn't look like much right now, but it'll be pretty once it's rinsed and finished. At least I hope it will be," she said offering a sheepish smile to the other canine. Reaching over she grabbed another garbage bag and wrapped the shirt up in it, standing to quickly take it to the back of her cave. "I'll be right back." It needed to be put in a cool and damp place for the dye to set well and the innards of a cave were perfect for that. When she reemerged she took the gloves off set them down on the bag she had used as her workspace. "It'll take most of the day to set. I can bring it by once it's ready, or you can come get it." The latter choice might be better, considering she hadn't faced Kaena since their argument. "So, how have you been Vieira?" Rikka knew normal conversation wasn't the Quintus' forte, but she honestly didn't know what else to do.

Vieira straightened herself up as Rikka disappeared into the back of the cave but the woman was back in no time and her smile was still plastered on her features. Rikka was nice and just showing her own kindness toward the slave and she needed to adjust to that. She might not had been table to take much but she could try to keep a smile on her face and do what she could. Adjusting became easier the more she did it and the more she understood. It would not always be the case but she tried to adjust to her company.

She came back and gave her options to pick up the t-shirt and Vieira just nodded. "Okay," she said and looked down at her hands. Conversation was opened back up and her ears twisted on her head. Carefully, the woman started to stand in order to fit how she was supposed to be. Rikka was standing and so should she. She stretched her legs from their former positions and straightened herself out, putting her hands at her sides for a moment and tapping her thighs. "I have been okay," she said and she pressed her nail into her leg. "How are you, miss Rikka?" she asked and her tail twitched to show she was eager to know.

Rikka couldn't help but to wonder if things had changed at all since her talk with her mother about Vieira and the moral implications of what she had agreed to. Kaena wasn't used to being faced with such questions and she had grown as testy as her daughter over the course of the conversation. She didn't really think much of what she had said had gotten through to the older Lykoi, but she had definitely made Kaena uncomfortable and perhaps that had been enough to make her question her treatment of Vieira. Curious as she was, she knew not to ask the younger girl. It would make her uncomfortable and she knew she wouldn't get a completely truthful answer.

She had been planning to sit back down, but before she could Vieira stood. Though this wasn't necessarily a bad thing, maybe if they moved around a bit they would each be a bit more at ease. "You want to take a walk?" A walk would be nice and it would be good for the both of them to get some exercise. "I'm okay too, thanks Vieira." Rikka began to slowly move away from the caves, ready to start their walk if Vieira was up to it. "Haven't been around here much though. Kind of a hard transition from where I was living before." Golden eyes glanced sidelong over to the shorter woman. "How do you like it here in Inferni?"

The woman was a little surprised that she suggested a walk but she did not object. Instead, she looked to the cave exit and where her original goal had been: the fire site. "Okay," she said quietly but knew she could not (or want not) to go far. She began to fall in step with Rikka and out of the cave to the overcast ahead. It was not necessarily a pretty day with the clouds over their heads and the threat of rain returning but it was not a big deal to her. She could easily spend the rest of the day inside the cave until she had something to do but right now she was going to remain with Rikka until it changed.

"It is okay," she responded and her golden eyes flicked toward the woman before she looked elsewhere and continued to walk. Her arms drew up over her chest in comfort. "It's colder," she admitted. She was much smaller than the average coyote and her fur was a lot thinner from living in such a hot climate all her life. Her fur had thickened but not nearly enough to keep her warm for the current winter alone.

She knew that Vieira probably wouldn't want to stray too far away from the caves, but they could still walk down the beach and be close enough for her to hear Kaena call for her. Though she hoped that whenever their current meeting ended it would be of Vieira's own choice and not because the Centurion called for her. Had her brother come to inspect the situation yet? He certainly hadn't seemed happy about it when she had told him. One of the only reasons that she was able to handle the situation at all was she was certain that Gabriel would not allow any harm to come to the smaller canine. She may have been stationed at the lowest possible rank, but she was still a member of Inferni and deserved protection.

Rikka walked at a slow and steady pace, her eyes scanning out over the endless expanse of ocean. While she didn't know where Vieira came from, from the way she looked it was fairly obvious that she had come from a much warmer climate. The winter would be rough on her, she feared, and she wondered if there was any more she could for her. "Maybe when I make my next trip to the city I can try and find you a coat. The shirt will help keep you a little warmer, but not as much as a coat would." She wasn't much one for clothing, but even she could admit that having a coat during these months would really help make it more bearable.

Vieira decided to remain quiet until they reached the beach. She nervously looked behind her and could only see the outlines of the caves but she was confident enough she could hear Kaena should she call. Her former owners did not let her away from the home by herself and rarely was she on her own anywhere for long periods of time. These few times away from Kaena made her feel uncomfortable when she could be doing something to make the woman happy. It was difficult to adjust to because perhaps her owner was still adjusting. Both her and Eris were thrown into owning a slave, in ways, and neither knew how to handle her. Perhaps her former owners did not even know but she never questioned them. Her way of life had been according to Astaroth and little changed when Sivaro took her upon her father's death. Eris had just kept her for status and because the slave had no where else to go and no other life to turn to.

Her paws hit the sandy beaches and she adjusted herself to the new terrain. Eterne was not far from the ocean but her first day in Inferni was the first time she had seen the coast at all. She had never been permitted outside city limits and none of them took her anywhere. It was a beautiful site, in her opinion, and she found a little happiness in the fact she could see it rather than being hidden from it. Her gaze glanced toward Rikka before they found a safe spot on the crashing waves. Her claws came up and crossed over her chest tightly to preserve any warmth she might have somewhere hidden inside. "What is a coat?" she asked, clueless to the term. Clothes were not all that common in Eterne, it was simply too hot, but she knew the idea of pants and shirts but could not exactly form what they looked like. The shirts back in Rikka's cave only gave her idea. Any other articles of clothing slipped her uneducated mind.

Rikka wasn't worried in the least about what Kaena would think about her spending some time with Vieira and taking an innocent walk with her. As far as she were concerned the only authority Kaena truly held over the smaller coy was that of the Centurion over the Quintus. In reality that wasn't the case, but that was how she were going to treat it. If for some reason the Lykoi matron came out here and got upset then she would have to answer to Rikka and they would undoubtedly get in another heated discussion over it. Still, she trusted that as long as Kaena were in someone else's presence she wouldn't dare to lay a hand on the sandy female. If she did then the de le Poer would call for Gabriel and let him know exactly what had happened. She didn't care if it weren't really her place to stand up to her mother in the pack. Spending so much time in the egalitarian commune had warped her view on pack life and she was more focused on familial ties than to the actual rank system.

She supposed it wasn't too surprising that Vieira didn't know what a coat was. If she came from a warm climate they would have no need for coats or anything of the sort. The question was how best to explain what it was since the other was unfamiliar with clothing in general. "A coat is kind of like a shirt, except it's heavier and has long sleeves instead of short ones. Also unlike a shirt they have a zipper in the front so you can put it on without pulling it over your head. People wore them in the winter to keep warm." At least the purpose of a coat was clear, unlike some clothing. A lot of clothing had no practical purpose for canines since they had fur to cover their bodies, but a coat could be useful for someone who had as thin of a coat as Vieira did. "I'd kind of be like having a blanket wrapped around you, except it would stay in place and wouldn't be as baggy." There, that should be a good way to model what a coat was like.

Vieira was quiet as she listened to the explanation of a coat. It confused her a little but she got the basic idea. She had no idea what a zipper was and could not even form an imagine in her head. The slave did not question it, though, and she offered a smile at the fact Rikka would do something so nice for her. She wondered if Kaena would let her have something from the other canine, knowing about the argument they got into over her. That was not why she was sent her, she was supposed to come in piece and at the working of Kaena and whatever she should chose to do with her.

She imagined Kaena would let her have something with the winter months coming up but she could not predict this information. She let her keep the Lego building blocks Snake brought but she did not know how much she was allotted in her tiny room. Vieira did not express these thoughts to Rikka, knowing she might get the woman upset over something simple. If Rikka would upset Kaena again, she was not sure it would be so nice as a few unhappy words this time around. She was supposed to keep quiet, she got that much from her the tone her master used, but she had so many standards to abide by that it made it difficult to follow every one.
