Niro and his sister had been shown to rooms in the Chien Hotel. His room was musty but dry and warm, it even had a nice spot for a fireplace which was immediately lit. Niro was laying down unsure of what woke him, he’d had a good dream, one where life was so easy he could just sit down drinking tea for most of the day, and training birds to hunt and send messages, but he had to wake to remember he had to go on this blasted adventure with his sister, she was the only thing he had to a family, and so far… this adventure was proving to be as much different from her own descriptions as he figured it would be. He opened his eyes a little and looked out the window. What he saw he couldn’t believe! He shot up and ran to his sister’s door pounding on it excitedly. He opened the door knowing she’d be writing in her journal frantically so engrossed that she didn’t know anything that was going on around her, of coarse she would be writing about their encounter with the king.

”You have to come look at this sis!! It’s amazing!”

He pulled the pen out of her hand and moved to the window where fluffs of white snowflakes falling to the ground that was now entirely frozen over from the rain and a sheet of white snow had fallen over it. He’d never seen snow before, and it was amazing, he was absolutely excited,

”Come on forget your books, it’s time to have some fun!”

He said, running back to the door and held it open for Orin, hopping on his feet like a kid at Christmas.

Certainly Niro’s assumptions about his sister’s morning task had been accurate. The girl had stayed up late into the night positively glowing with the success of their long and arduous journey. Even after the pair had been given separate rooms side-by-side and the glorious King and the admirable lady Firefly had departed (much to Orin’s dismay), the exertion of their travels could not overtake her and coax her into dreamland. Reeling in the feeling of pride and the excitement of actually meeting the man… the king!... from the stories she had read, she found the thought of lying down and going to sleep excruciating. Unfortunately, since she had to pack light for the journey with her brother and they had only been here barely more than a day, she had no books to bury herself in save for her own journal. For a moment she contemplated exploring the Chien Hotel and seeing if she could find any literature, but decided against the idea of wandering the halls late at night on her first day in Cour Des Miracles. Someone might get the wrong idea… though certainly it would not be long until one of Orin’s adventures and her wild imagination would draw her out at some ungodly hour, but hopefully for the girl’s sake that would be after she got to know some more members of the pack.

So instead of wandering the halls or insisting that the King or Firefly or Niro stay with her, now that everyone was exhausted from the day, she set up her meager but priceless possessions on the small, dusty desk, made quick work of cleaning off the desk and other furniture (though the bed linens and most of the rest of the room had recently had a good cleaning), and set to work reviewing the great adventure that her journal chronicled. It wasn’t long before her heavy lids began to work against her, and the girl slumped over in her chair as she dozed.

Strands of light pierced through the window’s plantation shutters, and as the sun slowly crept above the horizon the inviting sun meandered along the floor and soon cast across Orin’s face and gently coaxed her back to consciousness. She awoke with a cramp in her neck and side from the funny way she had fallen asleep, but otherwise felt splendid and renewed. She blinked as her honeyed eyes adjusted to the morning’s sunlight, then peered out the window for a moment before realizing that she must log this glorious morning in her diary! She jerked upright and grabbed her pen, flipped to the next blank page of her diary (this book would be full, soon!), and began scratching down her thoughts. She didn’t stop writing until a sudden thump thump thump! penetrated the silence and made her jump out of her fur. She whipped around in the chair to glare at the entrance as Niro flew through the doorway and snatched the pen from her delicate fingers. “Niro! Look what you made me do!” She huffed her exasperation as she held up her journal to display a bold, jagged line drawn across half the page.

“What are you on about now?” She muttered, as though it were Niro who always went on about daydreams and whimsical tales, rather than herself. She watched him go to the window and unbolt the shutters, and her jaw went slack. “Wow…” She stood and moved to her brother’s side at the window and gazed out at the stunning winter scene. “It’s… beautiful.”

“Last one there sleeps in the doghouse tonight!” She cried, accompanied by that childish giggle of hers as she shoved Niro away from the window towards the bed, spun around, and made a mad dash for the door. She had forgotten the sheepskin cloak that she had donned for all their trip, which was no concern. She only wore it to keep the rain off of her skin, but her arctic fur was well bred to keep her safe from the snow’s ravaging chill.

She bounded down the stairs taking them two and three at a time, laughing and listening for Niro’s pursuit. She didn’t stop to see if anyone was around in the common hall as she bolted for the door and flung herself outside into the snow-kissed world.

The second she was at the doorstep, her foot slipped on the slick, icy step, and her legs went out from under her. Luckily, her forward momentum sent her landing on the ground below, not on the step itself, and she was unhurt. She lay where she landed, laughing like a pup, and waited for her brother to discover her.

Oh just say it was another adventure you had to run off to to make a smudge like that, you will like it eventually,
Niro said as he threw open the shutters to show his sister the white world he had discovered only moments before. It was definitely time to explore, and he laughed at his sisters excited face and raced after her when she yelled out, this was what life was suppose to be about! Fun, laughter, joy, everything it was right this second. He laughed when he saw her trip over herself and slide into a pile of new snow and he ran after her, knowing she was ok because she was giggling like a little pup something, he hadn’t seen in her in a long time. He took a few careful steps down into the snow and shivered, it was definitely cold, and it wasn’t anything like he imagined, he could move through it almost like water, he’d heard of snow but never really seen it, he thought of it as small blocks of ice or something, but it was much too soft for that, he picked up a hand full and laughed

This is so awesome!

He exclaimed as he rolled some snow up into a ball and threw it at his sister but it missed. He took a step backward to run from her but he too slipped on the ice and he fell on his rump.

The sound of her laughter raised a few decibels as she watched her brother try to make a hasty retreat, only to tumble to the ground himself. She sat up and gathered up some of the soft, flaky snow into her hand and packed it into a ball… which turned out to be a much trickier task than the books had ever made it seem! She couldn’t get the stuff to stick together, but soon enough she had a meager excuse for a snowball and flung it at her brother. She chortled even harder when it collided with the side of his head.

She scooted herself away from the icy path that led to the entrance of the Chien Hotel and crawled onto the snowy ground where she found it much easier to stand up. The snow clung to her fur and for the most part blended in perfectly with her white pelt, though it mottled her dyed dreadlocks and tail. She peered out at the blanketed ground, the sun glistening and sparkling off of the snow. “It’s like glitter. Niro, I never imagined it would look like this!” She inhaled deeply; the frigid, biting air that filled her lungs both chilled and refreshed her body and spirit. She grabbed a handful of snow and braved a sample, tasting the cool, unpolluted icy water.

“I can’t believe we’re here. I just can’t believe it. This is all so perfect… so different from back home” she breathed the words as she surveyed the endless pack territory. Despite the very real events that had transpired, she still wondered if she was dreaming from time to time. “Pinch me!”

Niro was laughing at himself when a small snowball collided with his head, he stopped for a second and watched as Orin crawled away, he burst out laughing again, it was short lived as he tried standing instead of crawling, he’d master the ice, he swiveled a little when he was on his feet but he didn’t slip yet. He lost his balance a few times before finding solid ground, well solid enough. Then hearing her words the memories crashed on him, how they had to hide just to survive, it took a lot for him to keep her fed, since there was little to no food, he even had to resort to stealing which made them have to hide twice as long, that was before heading on the boat, which they had more freedom there than he could have imagined… although he was not free from seasickness. Now here they were playing in the snow like pups. At the words pinch me, he pinched his sisters cheek

This is no dream sis.

He said, his tone almost hurting, but with joy rather than sadness, life would be better from now one, of coarse, until Orin did something crazy again. He knew she wouldn’t stay here for too long even though they were accepted into the pack, she would still try to get out to explore, especially when she would find a library or something.

She flinched when he pinched her cheek, and rubbed it vigorously. She shot a glare at him, though the look was in good humor. “I didn’t mean literally pinch me!” She laughed, and grabbed a handful of loose snow and tossed it into his face, before turning and jogging away from him, and unspoken invitation to a game of chase. Though she wasn’t frolicking long before she stepped into a deep bank of snow and sank into it to he knees.

“Niro, help!” She laughed as she tried to twist around to look at him. Her stomach was starting to hurt with all this mirth! She began to dig at the snow to free her legs. This was so preposterous, and embarrassing! She stole a glance to see if he was coming to assist her, or if he was planning some type of stealthy brotherly attack. “Don’t even think about it, Niro!” It had been too long since they had been able to play like this, and had many months to make up for. The reprieve was worth more than even Orin would have ever been able to put into words. Now, for once, in the safety of their new pack’s territory, the only thing she had to worry about attacking her was her own brother!

His sister knew him well, he didn’t blend in with the snow like his sister especially with his black mohawk, but he knew how to move silently and with a tree or two in the way he had the perfect advantage over her. He grinned as she fell throught the snow and surpressed another laugh as she tried to get out of her predicament, he waited as she said he shouldn’t do what he was about to do, the silence and the suspence made him love the moments like this. He didn’t have to look at what she was doing, he knew she was looking around for him. he hadn’t gotten a chance to use his stealth in play, they were normally running for their lives, thank goodness this won’t be the case from now on! He was oblivious to the other packs and any of their intentions of coarse and what went on in his own new pack was new to him as well but it felt like home already, thinking about that he sprung out from behind a tree, which Orin’s back was to it, and he tackled her face first into the snow, which dislodge her, but he was sitting on her with the side of her face in the snow, he could tell she could breath, or he would have instantly let her up at least long enough to make sure her face wasn’t entirely in the snow. He sat on her, laughing triumphantly

So who’s the boss?

He asked crossing his arms over his chest, looking like a proud wolf triumphant over a war he’d just won singlehandedly. He kept his feet on her arms and pinned her body down wit his rump, he was only slightly bigger than her, but that was because he was a male, he couldn’t give age an excuse because she was born before he was, which she always got back at him in some way or another.

“Niro... Niiiiro?” She peered around, expecting to have seen her brother behind her and walking over laughing, but he wasn’t! Oh joy, where was that sneaky son of a… She began to dig a little more frantically at the snow that encased her legs, knowing that her sibling must have some cunning scheme in the works! She still couldn’t help but give an intermittent giggle to herself as she worked to free herself from the embankment. Just as the snow around one foot began to give, a dark silhouette shadowed her.

“Oof!” She huffed as she was shoved forward and into the snow, her brother on top of her. Her hackles bristled and her tail fluffed with surprise even though she had been suspecting the attack. Then she began to giggle as she flailed her arms, and tried very unsuccessfully to sound upset. “What do you think you’re doing? Get off of me right now, Niro!” but her laughter betrayed her indignant words.

She pushed against the snow with her arms, trying to simply lift herself and her brother, and in some cases when she had the right leverage she could. But the snow buckled beneath her palms this time and she could not push herself up and her brother off of her no matter how hard she struggled. Finally, she went limp with defeat, though the smile never left her muzzle. I’m the boss!” She joked, sticking her tongue out at him. “I’m just letting you think you have the upper paw.”

She squirmed beneath him, and thanks to the give in the snow she somehow managed to turn herself over. She glared up at him for a moment with narrow golden eyes. Her maw parted and she sighed in defeat, “Okay… you’re the…” but her words were only in jest, and before she finished she shoved a fistful of snow into his face and began laughing anew. Hoping to get the upper hand thanks to her sneak attack, she pushed against his chest in hopes of shoving him off of her.

Upon being smashed in the face with a lot of snow, he was temporarily blinded, and with those few seconds of distraction Orin was able to push him off her, he flailed his arms as he lost balance on her, and he fell on his own back, he laughed at her own cunning, and breathed hard, watching the mist of his breath rise as he breathed out and the chill of the air as he breathed in, this was what life was suppose to be about! Playing, having fun, last he could remember having fun was when his parents were there to protect him, when he didn’t have to make sure his sister was taken advantage of because of her own innocence and her naïve attitude.

Fine, you're the boss, only because you got us here,

If he’d gone back in time and told himself about this place, even he wouldn’t have believed it until he actually saw it for himself, there was order here, peace, there was an alpha who could keep control of his subjects, there was order, and it was nice. He didn’t understand any of this when he was a pup but now that he was older and more experienced in the world, he knew it was crucial to have a strong leader, Jac seemed strong, although a bit full of himself, from Niro’s first impression.

He sat up and rested himself on his shoulders, his gray fur covered with snow blotches, and his Mohawk a little askew from the tag game and rolling around in the snow, he’d fix that later when he was warm and dry.

Thank you for bringing us here sis.

He said sincerely, his breath calm now, and his excitement died down, now he was just feeling a sense of tranquility a he looked over at the horizon, the sun was glaring on the snow now so it was hard to see too far away, but it was one of the most beautiful sights ever, which made him wish he was a painter so that he could capture this moment.

When Niro was shoved off of her, she rolled onto her back so she wasn’t so awkwardly shoved into the snow, but she did not bother to get up. Smiling at her brother, she said, “Of course I’m the boss!” then turned her eyes to peer at the cloudy sky. Despite the flurries and rain Cour des Miracles had been having – weather patterns Orin was not yet accustomed to – several patches of vibrant, clean azure sky peeked through the blanket of thick clouds above. All the while the clouds threatened to come together, blot out the sky and reflect white-on-white, though they never quite managed it. Still, bits of snow came down onto the pair in random gusts, and a small mantle of snow was already beginning to collect on her fur. Her jovial grin transformed into a serious smile of sincerity at her brother’s words. She reached over to him and put a hand on his shoulder. “You’re welcome, Niro. But I never would have made it without you. Thank you for coming. To think… we would still be back in those slums if you hadn’t have found that book.”

He was so vigilant… always looking after his sister. Even in the dangerous slums of the southern lands Niro oft returned to his sister from a scavenging mission with a ragged book. Even when it looked like there was nothing worthwhile in the pages, Orin usually managed to make quick work and find some intriguing bit in the book to run on about. The journal had been no exception… It was another torn, tattered, and musty old book (that turned out to not be half the age it appeared) with chicken-scratch for text. The frayed edges of the pages barely let the cover close, and it seemed to be an old bit of trash. Still, Niro trusted in his sister’s preoccupation with books enough to decide to bog his load down that evening with that one diary… the diary that had Orin so enraptured with the true account of Jac’s pack. It had made Orin realize that there was a way out, that if others from that cursed land could do so then so could they! The story had made her insist on their seeking passage to the north… and now here they were…

“I wonder what other gems this place has in store for us.” She mused whimsically as her eyes wandered. Soon she sat up, and leaped to her feet once again. Despite their harrowing journey upon the sea and the bit of lag she still felt, her youth and curiosity would not let her merely laze around on her first day here in Cour des Miracles! She snatched her brother’s hand and began to tug him upwards. “Come on! Lets see what else there is to find before that wretched rain starts up again.” Though rain seemed like little concern, it was a harder snow that threatened. It did not faze her, though, her coat could withstand it. What did make her retch was the thought of braving the ocean again. “But… Let’s stay inland. If I see another wave or fish right now, I think I’ll puke.”

WC: 507 I never knew I had it in me, sorry bout last night I was mighty tired!!!

He laughed at her when she said he'd helped to, yeah he found the diary all right, it must have belonged to someone at some time but they probably were mugged or killed and He'd found it in an ally way, under a lot of muck, they weren't picky at their own belongings, although it seemed like a bible to Orin at the time. It gave Niro a short break from keeping her off the streets, which had kept them alive, but he didn’t want to keep his sister locked away so that she would be safe, wolves were meant to be free and to howl at the heavens whenever they pleased. He remembered his first night on the boat he’d howled his own freedom, although he’d gotten sick and was yelled at by a few groggy, and crew members . But finding the ship was the hardest thing he could find, he had to barter all the possessions he had. He’d collected a number of things left throughout the city, that would be pricy, and because of that he’d managed to get on the boat. Orin didn’t know this though, he told her he just talked them into it, that they would do a little work for them in return for giving them passage through the seas. He couldn’t bare tell her his prized things were all gone now, it broke his heart just to think about it. He knew even if he wanted to bring everything, he couldn’t it was just too much, so it was better the crew of the ship had it than the murderers in the slums. He watched his sister look at the sky and he saw too, it did look like it was going to snow again, the weather changed so quickly here, it was almost overwhelming. Then she mentioned exploring and his ears perked up, he did want to know what the rest of their territory was like.

Ok lets go, don’t worry, I don’t’ want anything to do with those waters again for a long time, we can go more inland!

He said , sitting in one spot made him start to shiver, and moving around would definitely be better than sitting down on a ship throwing up all the time, just thinking about that made him feel slightly queasy. Walking always seemed to give him a purpose, and he fell in step with Orin letting her lead. She was definitely the leader of the two, he followed, and was her protector, fighting was in his blood at least he thought it was, no one had trained him but the streets themselves, maybe there was someone in the pack that could teach him properly. He wondered to himself, it would be good to learn new skills like fighting and hunting. He did hunt but he couldn’t hunt much more than small wild pigs and those were scarce, he didn’t know if wild pig even lived hear and if they were as small as the ones he’d hunted before.
