Quote:Rio had been so very frightened to venture outside of her home. There was a line that she'd never dared to cross: the borders of Phoenix Valley. It seemed so strange with the line blurred; there were no rules to keep her safely home not that she was a girl of nearly five months. Mingling with her hesitance and outright fear were intense curiosity and a sense of thrill. She wanted to see the whole world, now that it was open to her! Her ambitions had skyrocketed since her freedom was amplified. But it was the fear that kept her from wandering far, and she kept to the river. She had yet to explore a body of water so large, and as she hopped along the bank with restrained energy, she couldn't help but watch the current shift and swirl beside her. Her silver-lilac eyes rarely left the beautiful, icy water.

She paused when she saw, several yards ahead, an agouti female staring, listening to the water. Rio chirped out a soft "hello," but the wine-eyed fem gave no indication that she'd noticed other than the flick of an ear. Why wouldn't she answer? Rio was scared; the woman was larger than she and held an atmosphere of danger around her. The girl was surprised when she heard a different voice from the other side of the silent female. The latter glanced first at Rio, then at the wolf on the opposite side. With an unreadable look in her bloody eyes, she turned and disappeared into the forest. It left a strange, acidic feeling inside Rio, and she didn't know why. The swarthy child instead chose to approach the wolf remaining, a beautiful blond girl with bright eyes. "I thinks we scared'ed her!" she peeped softly. "My name is Rio, Miss!"

Quote:He'd told her to meet him at the edge of Arachnea's revenge, just before the forest began to thicken. He was so thrilled that he could not stay still, his fingers entangling in the horse's coarse, wavy main and his foot swinging against the animal's flank. He was so giddy with excitement, so happy that he was about to do something wonderful for her. Kansas had always imagined whisking her away from what so drained her, just for a little while. In his mind, he didn't refer to this as the pack, because he and every other Dreamer knew she loved it with all her heart. He meant the other things; the trouble with her siblings, the worry he saw in her eyes that he wasn't even able to explain adequately. She deserved to leave it all behind, and he was proud to be the one who could do that for her.

His bag held many things and strained heavily against his shoulder. He took it off and let it rest between himself and the horse's neck. Inside the black bag were items that he'd never carried before, but that might hopefully help them enjoy themselves to the umpteenth degree. Indeed, the boy was nervous, but only to see his raven's reaction to the surprises he had for her. And it went without saying that the horse on whose back he was mounted was the greatest of these. Strange though riding a large beast felt, Kansas was extremely enthralled to own one. He couldn't wait to sweep her off her feet and ride into the forest with her sitting behind him like the princess she was. There was more; he'd save it for when they'd reached the destination he'd carefully selected for them.

He was not completely certain of how long they'd be gone; not too long before life beckoned them home. The only important thing to him was that they would be there together, if only for a little while.

Quote:Oddly, Kansas had been successful in keeping his own word. He had managed not to leak anything to her even though he saw in her eyes that she wanted him to. This adventure had to be a complete surprise to her. Anu had given him the idea, but he'd decided to adjust it to add the excitement of the unknown. Every time he'd been at the edge of telling her what he had in store, he'd pictured her face when she saw him and Lexington, the blue roan stallion he now perched rather awkwardly upon. Ever since she'd called him her White Knight, he'd held this image of himself within mind, and that he was living it in its entirety was almost too wonderful for him to handle. And there was more, of course, than simply his own glorification in greeting her with the stallion. It was the time they would spend together when they had reached their destination.

The tall brute leaned forward on the horse, who was standing very obediently still, tolerating the fidgeting rider perched upon his back. The pale blue eyes of the werewolf darted to and fro as his hands continued to pester Lexington's blue-gray mane. After what seemed like weeks, her slender form rose to meet his eager gaze. As she drew closer and began to make sense of what lay before her, the resulting surprise sent his heart aflutter. He was warm from his toes to his face although the temperature lingered around freezing. Her emerald eyes positively sparkled, radiant in their wonder and happiness. Kansas beamed. Her reaction was everything and more that he'd wanted it to be.

For a moment he really couldn't speak. He felt abashed with his pride. "I'm glad," he finally said, and slipped smoothly off the horse's sturdy back. He had many more things he wanted to say, but doing so would erase the magic of the moment. Kansas wrapped his arms around her waist and looked down at her, giving her a kiss. Then, with a mischievous laugh, the boy swept her up into his arms and held her like a princess. He swung her around and placed her on the horse's back. Fortunately, Lexington didn't seem to mind the sudden motion. Savina was so slight that the beast probably barely felt anything. "Sorry about that; I had to," he informed her, still grinning. Kansas grasped the horse's mane and pulled himself up to sit in front of her. "Are you ready, beautiful Signora?" he queried as he turned the horse to face the forest.
